What about Gus Van Sant's simulated freeze frames in MY OWN PRIVATE
IDAHO? When the Keannu Reaves character is having sex with that Italian
girl, whom he eventually marries (thus moving from the fringe world of
the disadvantaged hustler to the fringe world of aristocratic privelage),
the actors are frozen in tableaus vivant, where, nontheless, one can
observe their eyes blinking or their breathing. The opposite happens near
the beginning of the film where the hustlers are shown occupying the
covers of gay porn magazines. Instead of being frozen still photographs,
the models animatedly engage each other in conversation.
