Gloria,
Though she never appears on screen, the title character in Hitchcock's
"Rebecca" is solely presented through indexical representation. For instance,
her monogram "R" appears throughout the film, on her stationery and address
book, and on the pillow in the film's closing scene. Also, the dog and Mrs.
Danvers (the maid) are often read as stand-ins.
Many of Hitchcock's films use indexical representation. Though I often find
her psychoanalytic paradigm tedious, Tania Modleski has a book called "The
Women Who Knew Too Much" which may be of some help to you.
Good luck,
Dana Greenblatt
