This is the text of the ad published in THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER (May 7,
1996).  Please, note, however, that the rank for this position is in fact
open, although "expertise" and "distinction" are stressed.

UCLA Department of Film and Television invites applications for a tenure
track, full-time appointment in Television Critical Studies.  Applicants
for the position must have demonstrated exceptional expertise through
publications of distinction in the fields of television history and
television theory, and they should also be knowledgeable about new
developments in electronic media and the institutional structure of
television.  Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree, administrative
experience, and a nationally recognized body of academic work.
Responsibilities include:  teaching graduate and undergraduate courses,
supervising Ph.D. dissertations, advising students, and serving on faculty
committees.  The successful candidate will be expected to play a leadership
role in the development of television and electronic media studies within
the department.
