hmm. i liked 12 monkeys and haven't read much about it (i generally
avoid reviews and the like) but disagree with you about "searching for
an excuse to prove that they have seen the obscure french film"
the film is not really that obscure. and i assume anyone with even a
mild education in film will have seen it. not only is the film on
video (from several different distributors) but a few years ago a book
of the film (one page per still) was published and available at most
good book shops. (ps if you have one, i'd like to buy it from
you--it's out of print). it is a staple at film school, and i believe
the rights are in the public domain which makes the likelihood of it
being televised quite good.
also, what would you think having read a review that hadn't compared
the two? would you not think the reviewer misinformed or ignorant and
without a sense of film history? hell, david peoples (who is an
excellent screenwriter--blade runner and the unforgiven are
masterpieces in their genres) has heard of it, why not other people?
second, i believe la jetee to be a superior film for one reason. it
understands occam's razor. it manages to get across more romance,
passion, and character in under half hour than 12 monkeys does in
close to 2 hours. it's that bloody simple in my book.
and yes, i liked 12 monkees.
ciaoder,
L.
