Kathleen Rowe's book, The Unruly Woman: gender and the genres of
laughter, which has large scetions on screwball as well as really terific
pieces on Miss Piggy and Roseanne.
 
You might also look at some of the essays in the anthology Classical
hollywood comedy, edited by henry jenkins.
