I watched SITR the other day on TCM and, keeping this on-going
discussion in mind, tried to pay specific attention to Reynolds' voice.
"Would You" and the voice of Lina Lamont is definitely Jean Hagen's
"real" voice (as opposed to her "Lina" voice), which is low and
mature-sounding, with very "actressy" diction. It's completely
different from Debbie Reynold's chirpy, very young-sounding vocal
quality. However, it also seems to me that in "Good Mornin'" and the
"Singin' in the Rain" reprise that Cathy Selden does on the stage, it
is definitely Debbie Reynolds and not Betty Royce or Jean Hagen or
anyone else. Compare to her vocal on "Tammy" -- which no one would
deny is Reynolds: it has that very chirpy, peppy Reynolds sound,
exactly like her speaking voice. Now, where Betty Royce probably comes
in is during "Lucky Star" (especially the reprise), which is higher and
more "trained" than those I think are definitely Debbie.

To which I'd have to add: three times is Lina Lamont!
