I've just returned from England and would like to make certain observations
concerning the points Don made.
POLLUTION. A problem in the U.K. especially the big cities. The Tories
thenetic privatization and fetishishtic emphasis on the car has led not
just to vehicles swamping roads in towns and villages not built for the
volume of traffic but pollution comparable to L.A. in cities such as London
and Manchester. Manchester's Oxford Road is now very pollutied. At Earl's
Court tube station, one person (not riding a bike) wore a pollution mask.
On that level, it is good to know Gilliam continues his radical dystopic
approach as seen in BRAZIL.
Also, the feature of insanity perception affecting a person from a different
era occurs in the neglected Hong Kong movie THE ICEMAN COMETH (no relation to
0'Neill). In this movie two warriors from the Ming Dynasty find themselves in
contemporary Hong Kong. The good and bad warrior find themselves perceived as
having low I.Q's due to their initial failure to adapt to their new
environoment. The plot sounds suspiciously akin to DEMOLITION MAN. If it
isn't the odious Tarantino will probably rip it off. He's finally receiving
his "come-uppance" by British reviewers over FOUR ROOMS.
