Kevin Sandler is editing an anthology of critical scholarly articles on the
classical and contemporary animation of Warner Bros to be published by
Rutgers University Press in Dec. 1997. The collection deals with different
critical areas of investigation within a cultural studies framework;
questions of power, identity, desire, and nationalism are potential
overarching themes. The editor seeks articles whose topics can cover a range
of methodological approaches, from specific textual analyses of cartoons and
the work of directors like Friz Freleng, Chuck Jones, and Tex Avery, to
historical archival research on the production context of the Warner Bros.
studio then and now. Thematic and discursive work on the formative role of
race, gender, and sexuality in the cartoons is strongly encouraged.

The editor welcomes articles which center on: particular characters as
"stars," such as textual and auteur-related examinations of the cartoons of
Bugs Bunny, Batman, Animaniacs, Tazmanian Devil et. al.; interviews with
animators and examinations of the work of related creative personnel that
have not received sufficient critical attention (such as the work of Carl
Stalling, Maurice Noble, Michael Maltese, and Greg Ford); the proliferation
of the Warner Bros. pantheon, including examinations of marketing,
collectibles, television series, theme parks and other investigations of the
relationship of Warner Bros. cartoons to popular culture; aesthetic
approaches of music, sound, layout and designs; and the structure of the
chase and the gag.
