PANEL: A METHOD TO OUR QUEERNESS? QUEER THEORY
          AND THE QUESTION OF METHOD

CHAIR: EDWARD R. O'NEILL, UCLA

Early forays in queer theory and analysis have
often by-passed a traditional and significant question:
what methodology regulates the interpretive procedures
applied to the text? This panel seeks papers which
examine the theoretical considerations introduced by
recent discussions of sexuality in light of the
specific interpretive methods either stated or implied.
Ideally, papers should reflect on queer theory and
interpretive methodology through discussion of a
specific film or films.
Questions to be addressed could include: Are
there specific interpretive methods which correspond to
theoretical displacements introduced by queer studies?
Do queer readings have methods of reading that are
specific to them? Do queer critical readings displace
and question various accepted critical methodologies,
including the very idea of a method, or not? Does
queer interpretive methodology depend upon the
subjectivity or orientation of the critic? Has queer
theory lived up to its own analyses, or do queer
critical analyses live up to queer theory?
