with regard to the question of whether paintings, productions, performances,
etc. are texts, the answer in each case in emphatically yes . . . one brief
supporrting example: critics [academic and journalistic] are fond of discussing
the differences in character between different renditions of the character
hamlet in S's play . . .  learly they "read" the character differently in each
production . . . and anything that can be read is a text . . . similarly with
attempts to "read" the smile of la gioconda
point is we are reading all the time . . . and can'thelp doing so
