In the very brginning of "The World According to Garp," Jenny is telling
the story of how she conceived her child to her parents. Apparently her
mother hears the entire story and faints while her father gets only
segments of it due to his hearing aid phasing in and out (this is what the
audience also hears). The scene is set right on the beach which provides a
great deal of ambient wave noise to the whole segment.
