 The situation is the same here in Canada, there are no educational use
exemptions in the copyright laws. If you want to show a film or
videotape or videodisk to a class or seminar group you must purchase a
public performance licence. It currently averages about $CDN 75 per
screening for a one-time use and about $CDN 300 for a 5 year licence for
videotape and videodisks. Film rentals are running between $CDN 150 and
$CDN 300 per screening depending on the age, popularity, time of year,
etc., etc.
 
With declining budgets due to government cutbacks (there are no private
universities in the Province of Ontario) it is having a major impact on
what and how much we can show.
