The Communication Studies Department and the English Department at
Northern Illinois University are sponsoring a four week summer program on
"Media and Culture in Ireland" at Dublin City University from June 25 to
July 21. In its fourth year, the program focuses on Ireland's struggle to
define its own cultural identity in a world of American and British media
domination. Students learn about Irish social and economic history and
literary traditions as a backdrop to understanding Ireland's development
of a modern, indigenous media industr--with intensive screenings of
historical and contemporary Irish films. Prominent Irish media artists
and academics present guest lectures in addition to lectures by NIU
faculty Jeff Chown, Robert Self, and Gretchen Bisplinghoff. Students may
earn six hours of graduate or undergraduate credit in Communication
Studies or in English.
