Dear Wolfgang,
A good place to start is a book by a frequent _New Yorker_ contributor -
unfortunately, I've forgotten her name - entitled _The Devil's Candy_. It's
about the making of Brian DePalma's 'Bonfire of the Vanities.' It is a
hugely entertaining and informative book and there is quite a bit written
about the test screening processes and their influence on the final editorial
process. It might be a good starting point from which to work your way into
more technical research. Good Luck! S. McCarthy
