Perhaps they are trying to catch the attention of the viewers by making them
look somehow more artsy or important. When you see something letterboxed,
you think "hey...is this a movie clip...what is this? Oh, it's just a
commercial for Lexus." But by then you have seen the Lexus, and "they've
got you." I know it worked for me...
