If you intend the word "literacy" to be read literally,
then I recommend Paul Messaris's book, VISUAL LITERACY: IMAGE, MIND, REALITY.
(Boulder, Co: Westview, 1994).

Messaris puts 'literacy' in inverted commas, as I have done here,
for a very good reason: he systematically demolishes notions that
learning to comprehend visual media, whether still photographs,
or TV and Film, is analogous to the literacy required for reading
written texts. I doubt anyone could read this book and still talk
about 'film language,' or the 'language of images' in any media.

You might also take a look at Steve Prince's article in the last issue
of FILM QUARTERLY. Good summary.
