Overlooked in the discussion of film festivals is the fact that many
festivals are more concerned with commerce than art. The prominence
of Cannes can be accounted for as a major market for worldwide distribution;
a long-established reputation; and a nice place to hangout on an
expense account while catching up with old friends and business contacts.
