"It's part of Providence (RI) lore that a downtown building (for the
Providence Journal?) stood in for the Daily Planet building.
 
Can anyone confirm/deny?"
 
I don't think so.  It's actually the LA County (or is it city?) building,
which was once the tallest building in LA. (I remember it being touted
as a landmark in THE REAL MCCOYS (with Walter Brennan, a straighter,
nonaffluent Beverly HillBillies--and when will that show come back in
rerun heaven?)
 
Actually, I always thought it looked like the Travelers Insurance Tower
in Hartford.
