I agree with Alison Mckee's reasonable point, if we must discuss the O.J.
Simpson Case, we should deal with the framework of presentation (the media)
. All of the anger seems to relate to background issues that would be more
properly covered on a list devoted to the social sciences. On another note,
Criteron has just released a masterfull laser disc recording of Merneau's
THE LAST LAUGH. I have used a very poor video recording of this in my
class, and I look forward to the student response to a pristine print. The
Laser recording of SHORT CUTS includes all of the Carver stories that the
film is based on. In most cases the stories are far more powerful than the
sections of the film, and I did and do like the film--Both Carver and
Altman do deal with repression and domestic violence in a dramatic and
artist way that might be worthy of discussion. Visions of Light does make
a nice introduction to a basic film course and it is also out in Laser Disc
. Why are we discuss the "truth" of THELMA AND LOUISE, the film has
nothing to do with truth it is an action drama. RICHARD III has nothing to
do with "truth" and Richard did not have the little princeses smothered in
the tower--but, it is great theatre. (Sorry about the errors, I still have
mastered the use of the terminal.
