Donna is definitely right about these scenes being painful to watch. The
Paxton character raises perhaps an interesting angle: how Cameron keeps
going back to certain performers to play certain types of roles, though
without having a Ford-style stock cast. Of course, there's Arnold S., but
there's also Michael Biehn (dedicated soldier hero from the future in THE
TERMINATOR, dedicated but psychopathic SEAL in THE ABYSS, future soldier
and survivor in ALIENS). Bill Paxton was also in ALIENS, playing, as I
recall, a soldier who cracks under the pressure of the alien attacks but
winds up redeems (?) himself by committing suicide with tough space marine
Jenette Goldstein before the aliens can reach them and use their bodies to
create more aliens. In any case, his reappearance at the end of TL does
let Helen get some sort of personal revenge on him, but it seems like a
cheap shot nonetheless.
