my Movies on TV book confirms that. it was 1961. i also remember Bruce
Jenner in *Can't Stop the Music* with the Village People (1980) and Kurt
Thomas did *Gymkata*, an awful martial arts movies, in 1985.

a note about the narrative thread, however. if we all seem to agree that
the paradigmatic structure of the tale that was woven before the Olympics
served discursively to create a sexist, racist, and class-based
competition/struggle/Olympic-spirit atmosphere that, among other things,
temporarily offset the fact that the Olympics is one big money-making machine,
what could the post-Games coverage of Nancy and her endorsements do to
affect this idea? i'm curious if Nancy can actually become an
overdetermined consumer image (or even a negative one if she
keeps talking to the press) and unintentionally undermine the whole
process. i mean, everyone KNOWS the stars will go off and make
millions selling products, but this year the Nancy v. Tonya issue
served to direct attention away from that enough so that the crass
commercialization was buffered. can the fledgling narrative of
Nancy and her Endorsements in any way work against the whole process
of justification/misdirection to which Nancy v. Tonya was directed?
