RLIN is an acronym for The Research Libraries Group; it is a subscription
database that many (most?) libraries subscribe to. Using RLIN it is
possible to learn which subscribing library has a specific volume.
There are several other databases such a archival, maps serials, visual
material, etc.

As a consequence it has largely
replaced much of the postal traffic in inter-library loans using email
messages between borrowing and lending libraries. As a side benefit
it is sometimes available at other places in the library.
