                                 *** CALL FOR PAPERS ***

What will the media future hold for us? The media present bears
considerable resemblance to past forecasts of what media futures would
entail. Such projections, though, have produced neither the utopian nor
the dystopian world that was envisaged.

The pace of development in the current media environment is rapid.
Changing trends in new technologies interface and vie with issues of
access, censorship, cultural identity, user-pays, inter activity and
consumption patterns. Such developments pose significant challenges
concerning appropriate policies and likely prospects for their performance.

Paper proposals are invited for an international conference centering on
the question of 'Media Futures'. This conference presents a unique
opportunity for the convergence of media users, theorists, policy makers,
artists, educators, futurists and publishers. The conference will be
co-hosted by the Institute for Cultural Policy Studies and the Centre for
Multimedia Research and Development, Griffith University, Brisbane,
Australia.

Papers are called for addressing the following areas:

o film and media theory, education and policy
o new technologies and media developments
o programming and cultural identity
o reception, consumption and audiences
o electronic publishing and distribution
o public, community and narrowcast media

Abstracts (maximum 300 words) of proposed papers should be forwarded
by 10 January 1994 and enquiries for further information sent to:

Media Futures Conference Coordinator
Institute for Cultural Policy Studies,
Faculty of Humanities,
Griffith University Q 4111 Australia.
