Try looking for Bud Greenspan's great series on the Olympics (12 Days of
Glory or something like that).  Lots of great stories of athletes (some
women).  Don't know if you'd consider these "popular."
 
I remember a made-for-TV movie about Babe Didriksen Zaharias some years ago.
 
"The Other Side of the Mountain" was about a female skier.  It can't be
very old.
 
For what it's worth, the newspaper comic strip "The Phantom" in your Sunday
Funnies has been dealing with female athletes for a few weeks.
