Films like "Destination Moon" and "War of the Worlds" have very positive
images of scientists as heros, in contrast to "The Thing" where the
military is more reasonable.  One of the more measured and realistic
portrayals of science and scientists (within what is finally a rather
"Strangelove" setting) is "The Andromeda Strain".
