        NATIONAL CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT

"DEMOCRACY AND THE FUTURE OF PUBLIC BROADCASTING"
                             9/18/93

On September 18, 1993, a national conference will be held in
San Francisco that will focus on the state and future of public
broadcasting.
The potential of interactive media, the expansion of cable
and community access television and the use of satellite to reach
new audiences has yet to be addressed by the public broadcasting
system.
The PBS system including NPR has become more and more
synonymous with commercial television. It excludes from it's
programming the many voices and visions that call out for
exposure. The continued censorship of labor programming and award
winning documentaries must be confronted on a national level with
the development of a strategy for resolving this problem.

This conference will look at the history of public
broadcasting, the increasing monopolization of the media and how
it effects democracy and what we can do to challenge the
direction and goals of the present public broadcasting system.
Speakers will be attending from throughout the US and we
will have reports on anti-censorship democratic struggles within
PBS from Chicago to Pittsburgh.
