There's a new academic job listing service available on the Internet
via Gopher. I haven't tested it yet, but here's the basic info:

                   INFORMATION ADVISORY

                 ACADEMIC POSITION NETWORK

A new on-line information service for providing notice of
academic position openings is now available to users of
Internet/Gopher. This on-line information service supports
institutions announcing open positions, and those
individuals searching for a new position.

The service is called the Academic Position Network (APN).
Institutions can submit position announcements through E-
mail as well as through more traditional means (Fax, Letter,
etc.). Announcements placed in the APN are retained on the
network until removal instructions are received from the
institution placing the announcement. Individuals seeking
information about available academic positions access APN
files through Internet/Gopher.

The information below describes how to gain access to Gopher
and the APN. The procedure and costs to place an
announcement in the APN are available in the APN/Gopher
files in the directory: "A.P.N. Info and Instructions" or by

                 Accessing GOPHER

To access information through Internet/Gopher, the userUs
desk top computer must use Gopher client software. This
software is available, at no cost, for IBM PCs and
compatibles, Macintosh, and generally for computer systems
running UNIX.

Gopher client software can be acquired by anonymous ftp
from:

                 boombox.micro.umn.edu

Instructions on how to use Gopher are available from that
source in the pub/gopher directory.

Using Gopher client software, access to the APN for browsing
and searching is straight forward.

General Gopher usage accessing world-wide files including
the APN, can be through the University of Minnesota. Its
server name, address and port number are:

                 gopher.tc.umn.edu; port 70.

These values are normally the default setting for Gopher
client software.

To access the APN files choose the Other Gopher Servers &
Info Servers directory. Choose the North America
directory. Choose the USA directory. Choose the General
directory. Finally choose the Academic Position Network
directory. You may now browse and search position openings
as described below.

Direct access to the APN is accomplished by specifying the
APN server name, address and port number in the Gopher
client software. These are:

                 wcni.cis.umn.edu; port 11111.

You may now browse and search position openings as described
below.

                 Reviewing Position Announcements

The Academic Position Network files may be browsed as they
are organized by country, state and institution. The text
may also be searched using a word or a combination of words
separated by and and or.

There is no charge to browse and search the APN files by
Internet educational users.
