A clarificatio for Carol Beck:  My concern about jargon-ridden academic
criticism is in NO way a condemnation of intellectualism.  Rather, I
was protesting an all-too-common tendency to disguise shabby thinking
with arcane vocabulary.  For the purposes of precision, of course use
of a specialized vocabulary is helpful, often necessary.
