TriBeCa stands for the Triangle Below Canal (st.), that is an area on the
west side of Manhattan, south of Canal St (a main East-West artery). The
name was attached after the area had become gentrified (70s?) and had
some semblance that required a separate identification to contrast with
Chinatown to the East.
