Thank you all for erudite response to my colorization question.
In return, here is a little anecdote:
Rumor has it (never check a good story!) that when Jean-Luc Godard
was approached by Frenck television for a telecast of "A bout de
souffle", he agreed, but on the strict condition that there would be
at least six commercial breaks and the film should be colorized.
The television company could not bring itself to comply....
