We are particularly interested in supporting new voices and approaches in cinema and media research, including underrepresented perspectives, neglected histories, and underutilized methodologies. Our students <https://cinema.washington.edu/people/graduate-student> have pursued research projects on topics such as French silent-era movie audiences, Chinese reality TV, Hindi cinemas, YouTube tutorials, and the visual culture of science and medicine.

Our faculty <https://cinema.washington.edu/people/faculty> are a distinguished group of interdisciplinary film and media scholars with a wide range of research fields, including: silent cinema, the history of technology, avant-garde cinemas, feminist media, documentary, East Asian visual culture and cinemas, television culture, South Asian visual culture and cinemas, and digital media. The Department of Cinema and Media Studies is currently in the process of hiring a new faculty member with a specialization in Race and Media in the U.S. <https://apply.interfolio.com/78359>, to start in the Autumn of 2021.

The University of Washington offers a variety of resources for the interdisciplinary study of film and media. Our students have pursued interdisciplinary education and research in partnership with UW’s programs in DXARTS <https://dxarts.washington.edu/>, Performance Studies <https://drama.washington.edu/phd-program>, and Science and Technology Studies <https://drama.washington.edu/phd-program>. The Walter Chapin Simpson Center for the Humanities <https://simpsoncenter.org/> provides graduate fellowships, research opportunities, and a diverse program of events and symposia in the Humanities.

Seattle is home to local cultural institutions such as the Seattle Art Museum <http://seattleartmuseum.org/>, Wing Luke Museum <http://www.wingluke.org/>, Northwest Film Forum <https://nwfilmforum.org/>, the Museum of Pop Culture <https://www.mopop.org/> and the Seattle International Film Festival <http://www.siff.net/>.
