Hi Robert,

My university has been participating in CMF for over a decade… And on the whole I think it’s been a really good experience for our students… with caveats!

First, as you know CMF is a for-profit company… They bring a cool event to campus, but it comes with significant programming costs (which has been absorbed by our administration, especially as other spring break-y events have been curtailed due to concerns over public drinking and such). Any school that participates in the campus-level CMF can have students be nominated for national awards… We’ve had several nominees (and even winners) over the years… And the school has built in sending 8 students (on 4 films) + an advisor to TERMINUS… And that, of course, is also a money-maker. It’s a nice opportunity for successful students, but it’s a money-maker for TERMINUS.

And the Cannes thing is the same deal. We had two students go to Cannes three years ago, and another is nominated this year. The cost is over $3000 + airfare, so even if the school commits a chunk of money I think the student will need to fundraise… Is it worth it? I’m honestly not sure… But students who went in 2017 loved the chance to go to Cannes… One of them now works for CMF, by the way! But I think it’s kind of a mistake for students to see this as a pipeline to fame and fortune, or even becoming an international (wo)man of mystery…

I’m not sure if I’ve really answered your concerns or not… But I’d be happy to talk more with you about this if it would be a help (my contact info is below). Meanwhile, I am networking my current student with those two former students who are CMF@Cannes alumni… Hoping they will give him the scoop…

Happy belated Thanksgiving!

Dear Colleagues,

I’m curious to know if anyone on this list has had dealings (or has mentored students in their dealings) with Campus Movie Fest.

We’ve supported our student film production organization each of the last two years in bringing CMF to campus. It has resulted in a quite impressive volume of short films being produced in a compressed window, and each year the winners of the campus event are invited to screen their films at CMF Terminus (which takes place this year in June in LA). They are also invited to apply for an opportunity to attend Cannes in May and screen their short.

All of this seems a bit too good to be true, frankly, so I’m wondering if anyone has experience/cautionary tales/reassurances to offer?

Many thanks!
Rob
