FINAL TWO WEEKS!!!

*CFP: **Far From Home: Migrants, Refugees, Expats, and Returnees*

An area of multiple panels for the 2017 *Film & History *Conference:

Representing Home: The Real and Imagined Spaces of Belonging

November 1-November 5, 2017

The Milwaukee Hilton

Milwaukee, WI (USA)

*DEADLINE for abstracts: June 1, 2017 (early decision) July 1, 2017
(general decision)*

Leaving home – whether permanently or for a few years – challenges and
recreates definitions of home. One home is lost – whether voluntarily or
out of necessity. Even if one returns, home itself has changed. A new home
is created. Old traditions of home are mixed with new possibilities to
maintain and create a sense of belonging. New couplings become possible.
Parents from an old homeland watch their children create new homes with
strangers. Some embrace the new possibilities. Some respond with attempts
to force the young to maintain a home culture they may not remember
firsthand.

How do motion pictures portray the promise and heartbreak of living far
from home? In a world where the global flow of immigrants and refugees are
increasingly fraught, how do screen narratives shape and reflect politics
and popular sentiments? In what ways do stories of acculturation and/or
return become vehicles for cultural awareness?

This area invites 20-minute papers (inclusive of visual presentations)
considering such films as: *Sin Nombre, The Kite Runner; Illegal; The
Immigrant; Hester Street; La Promesse; Not Without My Daughter; Eden is
West; Flowers From Another World; Eat, Pray, Love; Dirty, Pretty Things;
Brooklyn; *and *An Autumn’s Tale, *among many others*. *

Possible paper topics include:

· How is home defined? Nation? Region? Neighborhood? Clan?

· The nation as home

· Borders and boundaries

· Struggles of loyalty between the old and new homelands

· Home on the run – Finding or keeping “home” without a building to
call home

· Struggles of acculturation

· Loss of home

· At home, with Others

· The homes and family lives of migrants, refugees or expats

· Inter-ethnic/racial romantic relationships

Proposals for complete panels (three related presentations) are also
welcome, but they must include an abstract and contact information,
including an e-mail address, for each presenter. For updates and
registration information, see the *Film & History* website (
www.filmandhistory.org).

Please e-mail your 200-word proposal to the area chair:
