2. Studies in French Cinema Annual Conference

3. Colloque « Jacques Perrin, portrait d’un artiste engagé »

4. New books

1. Studies in French Cinema to be published by Routledge

As from January 2014, Studies in French Cinema will be published by Routledge (Taylor and Francis group). The editorial team has very much appreciated our close relationship with the Intellect team in Bristol. Moving to Routledge is a real positive. We anticipate that working with Routledge will see an increase in readership from enhanced marketing and promotion and that production will benefit from more streamlined processes. Routledge has considerable experience in taking on previously published journals and the breadth of their programmes in performance and visual arts, film, media, communication and cultural studies means that they are well placed to work with us in order to sustain Studies in French Cinema’s profile in the future.

2. Studies in French Cinema Annual Conference

Our annual one-day conference will take place at King’s College London on Friday 4 April 2014. We have decided to try a different format for 2014. There will be two broad themes, one in the morning, and in the afternoon. They are ‘capital’ and ‘Jacques Audiard’. The first will be coordinated by Will Higbee (Exeter), the second by Julia Dobson (Sheffield). The exact format of the sessions remains to be decided, but it is likely that we will have a series of short presentations followed by a roundtable. The Call for Papers will be issued shortly.

3. Colloque « Jacques Perrin, portrait d’un artiste engagé ».
Université Montpellier 3, 1er-3 avril 2014
[English translation below]

Call for papers: ‘Jacques Perrin: Portrait of a Committed Artist’
University Montpellier 3, 1st-3rd April 2014

Jacques Perrin is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic personality of the French broadcasting scene. First a young newcomer in the French and Italian movie business, then a visionary producer and enlightened director; over the decades, the founder of Galatée Films has made a name for himself as the Pygmalion of a demanding, inspired and charismatic work.
The aim of this conference will be to look into the matrix and kaleidoscopic figure of a man whose career seems to be driven by impulsive choices and an unorthodox off-beat style.
Jacques Perrin may seem to be a man of unruffled gentleness; he is nonetheless a fighting man. Pierre Schoendoerffer’s favorite actor since his performance as Lieutenant Torrent in La 317eme Section (1965), he took up the challenge to produce Costa–Gavras movie Z (Best Foreign Movie Oscar in 1970) and, later on, made a deep mark on TV history with his audacious program called La 25ème heure (1991-2000, winner of the Sept d’Or in 1997 for Best Cultural Program.)
These are three examples, three high points, quintessence of his capacity for renewal and surprise against the diktat of the system. He is indeed a key outsider who uses the unpredictable as a sure recipe for success. Françafrique is still a taboo subject? Jean-Jacques Annaud (Best Foreign Movie Oscar in 1977) mocks the African colonial way of life in La Victoire en chantant. Insects are boring? Microcosmos (1996, 5 Cesar, Best Producer Cesar won by Jacques Perrin) makes them spectacular. The Little Singers of Paris are outdated? Les Choristes are in (nominated at the 2005 Oscars, 2 Cesars won).
When looking at such a list of achievements, questions arise: is it possible to keep up a craftsman spirit in the cinema and TV industry while remaining bankable? Didn’t his regular appearances on TV studios make a dent in the aura of this legendary performer of Jacques Demy’s movie?
These paradoxes may be direct consequences of Jacques Perrin’s ability to promote and develop his “commitment” throughout his very atypical career.
This term, this “commitment”, will then be at the core of our reflection. The speakers of this conference will have to tackle it in its various meanings: artistic, economic, political, but also sociological, ethical or philosophical, etc.
The idea of commitment will be the keystone of a multifaceted critical portrait of the artist organized around three (non-exclusive) lines of research while browsing through his many performances and functions:
• ecology and the defense of the living world,
• historical and historic representations (either as an initiator or a performer),
• the revival of what can be called “popular” TV and cinema.

Papers could be in French or English.

Communication proposals (maximum 2000 characters spaces included) and a short bio-bibliography must be sent before November 30th to:
guillaume.boulange@univ-montp3<mailto:guillaume.boulange@univ-montp3>.

The selection will be revealed by email end December.
Proceedings of the colloquium will be published in 2015.
