CALL FOR PAPERS
SCMS March 2014, Seattle WA
Proposed Panel: "Film Dialogue: Debates and New Directions"

The once-neglected topic of film dialogue has attracted increased scholarly
attention in recent years, with the publication of Sarah Kozloff’s
pioneering study, *Overhearing Film Dialogue* (2000), and Jeff Jaeckle’s
recent collection, *Film Dialogue* (2013). Yet despite a growing interest
in sound studies, scholarship on dialogue remains scant, and to date, has
often focused on Hollywood cinema. This panel seeks to expand the field of
study by exploring dialogue’s role in other cinematic modes and national
traditions – in films produced outside the U.S., and/or in non-mainstream
aesthetic and economic contexts.

Possible topics include, but are certainly not limited to:

-- Dialogue in art cinema
-- Dialogue in global cinema
-- Dialogue in independent and experimental film
-- Dialogue and auteurs
-- The use of dialogue in promotion and marketing
-- Actors, performance, and the materiality of the voice
-- Dubbing, subtitling, and multilingualism
-- Dialogue and hybrid genres

Please send 250-300 word abstracts and a short bio by *August 10th* to
Elizabeth Alsop ([log in to unmask]).
