Dear members of SCREEN-L,
This message is to invite you to consider proposing a paper, panel, or workshop to be sponsored by the Urban Studies group within the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS), for the next annual SCMS conference, which will take place in Chicago, 6-10 March, 2013. Whether or not you have presented at SCMS before, your work may involve research into cinema and media representations, institutions, or technologies in urban contexts. The Urban Studies group in SCMS is dedicated to facilitating their exploration.
We hope that the Chicago conference will extend the exciting range of city-related studies which cinema and media which SCMS has increasingly embraced in recent years. Founded at the SCMS conference in Los Angeles in 2010, the Urban Studies group has already achieved success in its first two years, sponsoring 1 workshop, 7 panels, and 2 screenings at the 2012 SCMS conference in Boston last March, and now with a membership of 58 which continues to grow.
If your research touches on aspects of the urban, we invite you to join SCMS and its Urban Studies group and to consider proposing a paper, panel, workshop, or screening which the group might sponsor. The group is diverse and exciting, embracing present-day and historical studies of cinema, media, and urban life, in all its geographical variety, and by means of several methods: close textual analysis of urban-oriented films, television programs, digital video, or other media outputs; exploration of the techniques and technology, and thematic and formal strategies, they use to respond to the city; evaluation of their production, distribution, or exhibition in urban contexts; examination of the rapidly evolving landscape of screen-based, desktop and mobile computing applications by means of which the city can be mapped and rendered; and interpretation of all of the above with reference to urban theory; urban geography, sociology, and economics; architecture and urban design; urban visual culture; and the phenomenology and aesthetics of the city.
This list is by no means prescriptive, but reflects the exciting range of work already being done by scholars in [discipline] and in cinema and media. This is at a time when the question of the city continues to have urgent topicality in world events such as the Arab Spring, the Occupy movement, global financial crisis, and the Rio+20 Earth Summit on sustainable development. And, in 2013, SCMS will be in Chicago: a city with an especially rich history in film and media representation, production and consumption, one of the first American cities to have a film industry (cf. William Selig, the Essanay company in the 1900s), and, of course, one of the world's most important cities in the modern history of architecture and urban planning.
The deadline for posting abstracts for possible panels on the SCMS bulletin board is July 16th. The deadline for proposal of a paper to a panel is August 15th. And the deadline for proposal of panels and of open call papers to SCMS is August 31st. There is an annual membership fee to join SCMS, but you do not have to be a member to propose a paper for the conference (you may take out a free-of-charge temporary membership and, then, if your proposal is accepted, take out a full membership subsequently; see links below). Membership of the Urban Studies group incurs no additional charge.
On the SCMS website, the Urban Studies group runs a blog and online forum which may be used to contact group members with ideas or plans for the Chicago conference. Also, please feel free to ask us for advice. For example, we are available to provide feedback on draft proposals, if that would be helpful to you, or we may be able to help put you in touch with other potential speakers in order to make up a panel. The Urban Studies group can also sponsor the panel or workshop in which you speak, which can help to improve awareness of it and the size of the audience which attends. The group is also a great way to meet socially with others who share your interests. At Chicago, as in other years, we will an annual meeting and an evening party, which members are warmly invited to attend.
Thank you.
