Call for Papers

"Jazz and Film, a Love Affair"

2010 Film & History Conference: Representations of Love in Film and Television

November 11-14, 2010

Hyatt Regency Milwaukee

www.uwosh.edu/filmandhistory

Second Round Deadline: March 1, 2010

AREA: Jazz and Film, a Love Affair

Jazz is a "hot" music - a passionate music - and film, as Marshall McLuhan says, is a "hot" medium. For scholars, writers, and fans that are passionate about both, the intersection of jazz and film is truly "hot." This area, then, welcomes papers and panel proposals that explore the many ways that jazz, and the love of jazz, intersects with film and history. Both jazz and film have played major roles in American popular culture, from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present. Both have contributed to the emotional and romantic lives of several generations of listeners around the world. And both jazz and film are intertwined with the history of race relations: segregation, desegregation, attraction across racial lines. Possibilities for papers include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

*	Jazz bios (Charlie Parker, W. C. Handy, Chet Baker, Benny Goodman)
*	History of Jazz (Ragtime, Kansas City)
*	Jazz and Jazz-influenced Scores (Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Henry Mancini, Lalo Schifrin, Quincy Jones)
*	The Big Band Era (Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Harry James, Benny Goodman)
*	Jazz and Love on Screen (Man with a Horn, Paris Blues)
*	Jazz and Dance (All That Jazz, The Cotton Club, jitterbug, tap)
*	The European Love Affair with Jazz ('Round Midnight)
*	Black, White, and Blackface (The Jazz Singer, Bamboozled)

Please send your 200-word proposals to the area chair:
