SONIMAGE: The Legacies of Jean-Luc Godard

While the films of Jean-Luc Godard may appear to be reaching a smaller
and increasingly specialized audience with each new release, the
continued growth of the substantial critical literature surrounding
Godard’s work underscores its significant and enduring influence on
artists and scholars worldwide. A bilingual, inter-disciplinary
conference celebrating Godard’s 80th birthday will be held at the
University of Regina (Saskatchewan, Canada), Sept 16-18, 2010, aiming to
map the filmmaker’s legacies in the fields of sound and image. This
conference will coincide with a major exhibition of the work of Ian
Wallace, entitled Masculin-Feminin, to launch a four-month city-wide
festival of Godardian research, performance, exhibitions, and
screenings, culminating December 3, 2010, the actual birthday of
Jean-Luc Godard.
Paper proposals are invited to explore topics such as:
➢ The contrapuntal relationship between Godard’s imagery and sound
tracks;
➢ Godard’s cinematic innovations in the use of sound and/or image;
➢ Reflexivity and Intertextuality in Godard’s films, particularly
their discourse on the other arts (theatre, painting, literature, dance,
photography, etc...);
➢ Godard and Philosophy;
➢ Godard and Art: including reflections on the nature of art: highbrow
and lowbrow, museums, cafés, factories, billboards, and cinema itself;
➢ Godard and the City: its contrast with nature as an out-of-bounds or
a competing territory;
➢ Godard and Work (or Labour);
➢ Utopia and Dystopia: the notion of a possible future embedded in the
present.
➢ Godard and translation: Translation and adaptation of culture in the
films of Godard
Papers from a variety of critical perspectives (gender studies,
cultural studies, postcolonial studies, etc...) will be considered. The
committee is considering the publication of a selection of submitted
papers. 250-500 word abstracts (in French or English) may be sent via

Bien que les films de Jean-Luc Godard puissent paraître rejoindre un
public plus restreint et de plus en plus spécialisé, les publications de
plus en plus substantielles entourant son œuvre soulignent
l’importance de son influence de même que sa pérennité chez les
intellectuels autant que chez les artistes. Une conférence
interdisciplinaire et bilingue célébrant les 80 ans de Godard et visant à
cerner le legs du cinéaste dans les champs du son et de l’image se
tiendra à l’Université de Regina du 16 au 18 septembre 2010. Cette
conférence coïncidera avec une importante exposition de l’œuvre de Ian
Wallace, intitulée Masculin-Féminin, qui lancera un festival de
performances, d’expositions, de recherches et de visionnements liés à
l’œuvre de Godard, activités qui culmineront le 3 décembre 2010,
anniversaire de Godard.
Le comité invite des propositions de communications explorant les
sujets suivants :
➢ La relation contrapuntique entre l’imagerie des films de Godard et
leurs bandes sonores;
➢ Les innovations cinématiques dans l’usage du son ou de l’image;
➢ La réflexivité et l’intertextualité dans les films de Godard,
particulièrement leur discours sur d’autres arts tels que le théâtre,
la peinture, la littérature, la danse, la photo, etc.
➢ Godard et la philosophie;
➢ Godard et l’art, y compris des réflexions sur la nature et les
manifestations de l’art : la culture populaire et la culture
intellectuelle, les musées, les cafés, les usines, les
panneaux-réclames, y compris le cinéma lui-même;
➢ Godard et la cité : son contraste avec la nature en tant que
territoire hors-limites ou concurrent;
➢ Godard et le travail
➢ Utopies et dystopies : la notion d’un avenir possible enchâssé dans
le présent.
➢ Godard et la traduction: Traduction et adaptation de la culture dans
les films de Godard.
Seront considérées des communications provenant d’un éventail de
perspectives critiques (études féministes, genrées, études culturelles,
postcoloniales, etc.) . Le comité entrevoit la publication d’un volume
à partir d’articles sélectionnés parmi ceux qui seront soumis.
