Hello Everyone,

I am writing to let you know about four pioneering films that have recently become available on DVD for the first time. With two films by Michelle Citron and two early works by Laura Mulvey, the classic films in these two packages are essential for Film Theory, Cinema Studies, as well as Women's Studies collections, and they are now available through Women Make Movies.

These groundbreaking educational resources constitute some of the most widely-used feminist films in Cinema Studies courses. Two early works by feminist film scholar Laura Mulvey, AMY! and FRIDA KAHLO AND TINA MODOTTI, are previously unreleased and now available from WMM. And Michelle Citron's feminist classic DAUGHTER RITE is now available with bonus feature WHAT YOU TAKE FOR GRANTED, Citron's important and moving film about women's experiences in jobs traditionally held by men. Each package is a must-have for stimulating thought and dialogue on feminist film theory.

Films by Michelle Citron and Laura Mulvey ============================================

DAUGHTER RITE and WHAT YOU TAKE FOR GRANTED by Michelle Citron
*******************************************

The groundbreaking classic film about mothers, daughters and sibling sister relationships, DAUGHTER RITE by Michelle Citron is one of the most widely used feminist films in Cinema Studies courses.

"DAUGHTER RITE is a classic, the missing link between the 'direct Cinema' documentaries and the later hybrids that acknowledged truth couldn't always be found in front of a camera lens. Scandalous in its day for bending the rules of representation to enlighten its audience about filmmaking, DAUGHTER RITE has a lot to teach folks hooked on reality TV, too. Citron's documentary inquiries into feminism, women in the trades, and feminist approaches to media representation are time capsules that merit re-opening."

- B. Ruby Rich, author of Chick Flicks: Theories and Memories of the Feminist Film Movement

Includes bonus feature WHAT YOU TAKE FOR GRANTED, Citron's intimate and moving film about women's experiences in jobs traditionally held by men.

AMY! and FRIDA KAHLO AND TINA MODOTTI by Laura Mulvey and with Peter Wollen
*******************************************

The DVD release of AMY! and FRIDA KAHLO AND TINA MODOTTI, two early works by renowned film scholar Laura Mulvey, co-written and co-directed with Peter Wollen, affords film and feminist scholars long-awaited access to two of Mulvey's important projects in the discourse of feminist theory.

Mulvey came to prominence in the early 1970s with her seminal essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema. One of the most widely cited and anthologized articles in the field of contemporary film theory, this groundbreaking work investigated questions of spectatorial identification and its relationship to the male gaze. With this essay and other articles, Mulvey helped establish feminist film theory as a legitimate field of study.

"The rediscovery of these films will energize discussions of feminist film theory by illustrating the stakes of film practice."
