Subject: ECREA Gender and Communication Section Announcement

Dear All,

We are pleased to announce that the ECREA Gender and Communication Section
has been officially formed.

The Section Gender and Communication hopes to bring together scholars who
approach issues within the field of communication with a specific interest
in gender, conceptualised in a broad sense. The section specifically seeks
inclusivity in relation to gender studies issues on the part of media
research. Amongst gender-related issues are ethnicity, identity politics,
queer studies, media industries, feminist media studies, popular culture
studies, post-structural theory, as well as a host of philosophical
questions.

Aiming to bridge the gap between communication and gender studies, this
section welcomes interdisciplinary approaches that combine a focus on
gender with media research, namely media production, content analysis of
media texts and media use and/or reception.

The section is committed to transcending boundaries between academia and
professional praxis, offering the possibility for European interchange and
comparative work. The latter objectives cannot be dissociated from our
aspiration to create an international network focussing on themes
pertinent to Gender and Communication.

We are currently recruiting members for the Gender and Media Section. Only
ECREA members may join. ECREA charges 10 euros for membership the first
year and a yearly rate of 50 euros for each subsequent year.

One of our further goals is to create a Women’s Network which is not
necessarily embedded within ECREA and will therefore be operating on its
own in the long run. Those who become members of the Gender and
Communication Section are welcome to join the Women’s Network but are not
necessarily obliged to integrate it.

In case you are interested in becoming a member of the Gender and
Communication Section on the one hand, or of the Women’s Network on the
other, please send an email to the Section Executive Team at

Best Wishes,

Claudia Alvares, Chair
