Editor, The Moving Image
Journal of the Association of Moving Image Archivists

The Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) seeks a new Editor for its peer-reviewed scholarly journal, The Moving Image.  The search committee will also entertain applications from prospective co-editors who bring complementary skills and expertise to the position.

The Moving Image is published twice yearly by the University of Minnesota Press for AMIA and is also available electronically through Project Muse.  All of AMIA's 800 members receive the journal, as do many other individual and institutional subscribers.

Founding Editor Jan-Christopher Horak built a strong journal from the first issue in Spring 2001, serving as Editor for all twelve issues published during the first six years.  The Moving Image has become essential reading for both the archival and academic fields.  We now seek an Editor or Co-Editors able to continue the journal's record of depth and quality.

The Moving Image publishes articles concerned with moving image archives in the widest sense, embracing perspectives from a range of disciplines including but not limited to media studies, communication, history, and information studies. The journal addresses issues involving all moving image materials, including historic and contemporary film, television, and video, new and emerging digital technologies, as well as paper and three-dimensional collections documenting the history of moving image media. Content includes: 
	• scholarly papers and historical essays, addressing aspects of the moving image archives field or highlighting specific collections;
	• in-depth examinations of specific preservation and restoration projects;
	• detailed profiles of moving image collections or archives;
	• interviews with leading figures in the moving image archives community; 
	• analyses of techniques used to preserve and restore moving images;
	• theoretical and visionary articles on the future of the field;
	• technical and practical articles on research and development in the field;
	• reviews of books, films, programs and conferences related to the archival field.

The Moving Image consists of three sections: refereed essays, reviews, and a "Forum" section of shorter solicited pieces.   

AMIA is a professional association dedicated to advancing the preservation, collection and use of moving images through public and professional education.  Its objectives are to: 1) raise public interest in the preservation and use of moving images, as educational, historical, and cultural resources; 2) advance the professional development of moving image archivists; 3) foster research and collaboration; and 4) promote standards and best practices.   


Duties

The Editor serves a three-year term, with option of renewal. The Editor is responsible for selecting an Editorial Board, subject to the approval of the Publications Committee and AMIA Board of Directors. The editor will be expected to recruit new members to the Editorial Board as needed. Upon assuming the duties of Editor, neither the AMIA Board of Directors nor the Publications Committee exercise jurisdiction over the editorial content of The Moving Image.

The Editor supervises the journal's referee process, selects and monitors reviewers in the blind, peer review process, and communicates the results to authors. Working with the authors and editors of the review sections of the journal, the Editor insures that all material is submitted to the University of Minnesota Press in a timely and professional manner. The AMIA Office and the journal's editorial team provide assistance to the Editor in the preparation of journal issues.  

The Editor is expected to be a member of AMIA and will serve on the AMIA Publications Committee.  He or she shall also attend the Committee meeting at the AMIA annual conference.

The Editor is selected by a search committee, consisting of five members of the journal's Editorial board and headed by the AMIA Publications Committee chair.  Final approval of the selection rests with the AMIA Board of Directors.

Deadline for applications is October 30, 2006.  The position will remain open until filled.
