RHETORIC OF THE OTHER V: FROM PREVISIBILITY TO HYPERVISIBILITY/RHÉTORIQUE DE L'AUTRE V: DE LA PRÉVISIBILITÉ À L'HYPERVISIBILITÉ, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 4-7 October 2007 / 4-7 octobre 2007

In 1997, Professors Martine Antle and Dominique Fisher organized a revolutionary conference at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that they called "Rhetoric of the Other." It was devoted to explorations of the representations of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and queer subjects, matters, and subjectivities in French and Francophone cultures. Since then, there have been three further conferences with the same title, the last held in 2001. During the past decade, there have been numerous LGBTQ-themed conferences, volumes, and special issues of journals. In 2006, for example, William F. Edmiston of the University of South Carolina organized the annual French Literature Conference on "Queer Sexualities" and Dr. Florian Grandena (Université Concordia) organized a conference entitled "Hypervisibilité," devoted to the representation of LGBTQ-related matters in contemporary visual media in France and the Francophone world.

We are proposing to continue in this tradition with a conference held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on 4-7 October 2007, entitled "Rhetoric of the Other V: From Previsibility to Hypervisibility." It will focus specifically on LGBTQ-related matters in French and Francophone cultures, literatures, and media (film, television, new media, the Internet, etc.) from the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. New approaches to queer studies and its interrelations to cultural studies, aesthetics, and specific literary praxes, changes in our conceptions of what queer theory might be, changes in the optics relative to HIV infection, the development of new means of communication and representation, and the developing maturity and decreased marginality of the field all speak to the necessity of having another conference on "Rhetoric of the Other." We envision a conference held over two full days (8-9 October 2007), with two parallel sessions, thereby accommodating approximately fifty speakers.

We are eliciting proposals on issues, topics, and problematics relating to LGBTQ cultures, literatures, and media in France and the French-speaking world. Abstracts in English or in French of 200-300 words should be sent electronically to Larry Schehr in RTF (rich text format) by 1 October 2006: [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> We will be able to provide feedback on proposals approximately six weeks after that. Presentations in English or in French will be twenty (20) minutes long.

« Les dispositifs », 19 and 20 October 2006

e-mail: Sylvie Thouard <[log in to unmask]>

The notion of dispositif can be loosely defined as the various procedures which contribute towards establishing a relationship between audiovisual works and their audiences. The same dispositif can be used in many different ways, and there are many different dispositifs, both real and virtual.

The purpose of this conference is to provide a forum for recent contemporary research on this topic. Its historical dimension will only be of interest if it informs the present.
Several fields of research are proposed:
- An in-depth analysis of classical dispositifs, from the standpoint of their multiple uses
- Questions of spectatorship and the related question of interactivity
- Changes in dispositifs as seen by the audiovisual industries
- Hybridity and metissage of current dispositifs
- Managing the conflicts between different types of dispositif
- Current experiments

The conference will be held on 19 and 20 October 2006 at the École Nationale Supérieure Louis-Lumière and at the Université de Marne le Vallée.

Papers will be given with the aid of audio, visual or audiovisual materials as required. They will last 1 hour (45min. presentation, 15min. discussion). The given papers could be published in the Cahier Louis-Lumière.
