1. PEC (English text; French below)

PEC 5
PEC5: 5th CONFERENCE ON POPULAR EUROPEAN CINEMA
Crime Dramas
Call for papers

The first PEC took place in 1989 at the University of Warwick (UK) and defined the parameters for this new field of research. A selection of papers was later published (Popular European Cinema, ed Richard Dyer and Ginette Vincendeau, London, Routledge, 1992).
Several PEC have since followed on various topics:
-1996 "Sex and Comedy", at Punkaharju in Finland
-1999 "The Spectacular" in Warwick
-2003 "Methods and Stars" in Stockholm (publication forthcoming).

The next PEC will take place in Paris on June 25-27 on "Crime dramas".

As in the previous conferences, its objective is to approach popular Europeans cinemas as a genuine area of research in itself and not, as academic study has tended to do, within a dichotomy that distinguishes Art and auteur cinema in Europe from popular Hollywood cinema. This opposition generated by cinéphilie, has cast European genre cinema into shadow, and nowhere is this more true than in the case of crime dramas which is still associated to Hollywood cinema, to such an extent that it is difficult to find references to the various European forms of the genre (with the exception of France) in most film encyclopaedias and dictionaries.

The aim of the conference is to explore and to give more visibility to a genre that exists across Europe but has yet to become the object of any academic interest.

We would like to invite contributions in order to:
-explore the various forms of crime dramas in Europe according to different countries and epochs
-analyse the specific narratives forms of this genre and its links with popular crime novels
-examine the cultural and ideological issues for representation and reception (class, ethnicity, etc...)
-question the gender dimension of a traditionally male genre
-study the range of actors, actresses and stars associated to the genre
-observe the influence and cultural transfers between the various forms of the genre within Europe as well as in relation to the Hollywood model
-explore the possible cross-influences and hybridity with other genres
-evaluate the contemporary development of crime series on European television.

Priority will be given to abstracts which emphasize the popular dimension of crime dramas.

Abstracts of 150 words, along with a brief biographical summary and a short biblio-filmography (max 100 words), should be sent by 1st June 2006 to the three organizers:

Raphaëlle Moine (Professor at the University of ParisX-Nanterre): [log in to unmask]
Brigitte Rollet (Lecturer at the University of London Institute in Paris): [log in to unmask]
Geneviève Sellier (Professor at the University of Caen): [log in to unmask]

Conference Fee:

Full fee : - 100 euros (including a lunch and the conference dinner)
- 50 euros (without dinners)

Postgraduates and unwaged : - 50 euros (including a lunch and the conference dinner)
					- 25 euros (without dinners)

A website of the conference will be available from January 2006 (www.pec5.info)

PEC 5

- explorer les diverses variantes du film criminel et policier en Europe, selon les pays et les époques ;
- analyser les formes narratives spécifiques qu'a pris ce genre, et ses liens avec la littérature policière populaire ;
- examiner les enjeux culturels et idéologiques de ce genre, en termes de représentation et de réception (classe, " race ", etc...) ;
- interroger la dimension sexuée d'un genre traditionnellement masculin ;
- étudier les figures d'acteur/actrice et de star associées  à ce genre ;
- observer les influences et les transferts culturels entre les divers avatars du genre en Europe et ainsi que par rapport au modèle hollywoodien ;
- mettre à jour le jeu des hybridations avec les autres genres ;
- évaluer les enjeux économiques de ce genre ;

ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2006
UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD SEPTEMBER 7-9

Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité: the Concept of Rights in Modern and Contemporary France.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Proposals for papers are invited on the theme Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité: the Concept of Rights in Modern and Contemporary France. Papers may discuss 'Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité' as a unified concept or deal with one of its three components individually. Conference participants are invited to explore how the concepts of freedom, equality and fraternity have been expressed, represented and put into practice in France. Proposals are therefore encouraged from the wide range of disciplines to be found within the ASMCF taking either an historical or contemporary approach. The suggestions for topics listed below are far from exhaustive and proposals treating others within the general theme are warmly welcomed.

1.	'Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité': the role of this concept in the formation and shaping of nationhood and national identity, political ideologies, political opinion, social movements, or the notion of the 'exception française'. Representations of the national identity derived from this concept in film, literature, music and the visual arts.

2.	Liberté: freedom of expression; freedom of the individual; sexual freedom; political freedom; freedom 'from' unemployment, poverty, hunger etc; limitations to these freedoms, censorship, political repression; liberation struggles and their representations in contemporary culture.

3.	Egalité: ideological understandings of equality; critiques of traditional notions of equality; equality feminism; race and equality; social equality; globalisation and equality.

4.	Fraternité: questions concerning the cohesion and divisions in French social, political, economic and cultural life; post modernity and notions of cohesiveness; cinema and the 'fracture sociale'; hip-hop culture and expressions of community identity.

Please send proposals to: Dr Jan Windebank ([log in to unmask], 0114 222 4888) Dr Julia Dobson ([log in to unmask], 0114 222 2877) or Dr Guy Austin ([log in to unmask], 0114 2224890), Department of French, University of Sheffield, Sheffield S10 4GD by 1 January 2006.
