CALL FOR PAPERS
_New Review of Film and Television Studies_ invites proposals for a
special issue on South Eastern European Cinema.
Special Issue Editor: Sasha Vojkovic (University of Zagreb & University
of Rijeka)
Currently, there is an ongoing re-focusing of attitudes on the European
continent: In the Western part of Europe multiculturalism seems to be
on the verge of becoming a myth whereas in the South Eastern part (the
politically correct term for the notorious Balkans), it is on the verge
of becoming reality. Considering the recent political events in Western
Europe it is possible to conclude that the concept of the Balkans as a
disintegrated region fraught with ethnic antagonisms may be a shifting
one. Accordingly, the Balkans, described by historian Maria Todorova as
"a repository of negative characteristics against which a positive and
self-congratulatory image of the 'European' and the 'West has been
constructed," may just become a thing of the past.
The complexities, contradictions and blind spots bound up with identity
formation in particular in the countries of former Yugoslavia can be
taken as an example of and as interrelated with the politics of
European dis/integration; from striving toward democracy and/or
subverting the norms and values of the communist system in the most
radical ways, to the affirmation of separate nation states, seeking
ways to cope with the political chaos and finally, exploring the
possibilities of coexistence.
We welcome papers (6-8,000 words) that explore the role of film and
media in shaping the cultural and national identity in the region of
South Eastern Europe in the communist and post communist era but we are
especially interested in the most recent, post Yugoslav war phase. Of
particular relevance is the role of film and media in speeding up (or
complicating) the process of democratization and recuperating (or
putting pressure on) national subjectivities.
We encourage contributions surrounding but not limited to these themes.
Please send inquiries and abstracts (2-300 words) to Sasha Vojkovic, at
