John,

A course on the representation of the artist would be a great way to
introduce students to the comprehensive ways that film employs the other
arts. I know of two books you might want to consult: "Incorporating Images:
Film and the Rival Arts" by Brigitte Peucker (probably too dense for most
undergrads, and certainly theoretically problematic, but interesting) and
"Cinema and Painting: How Art is Used in Film" by Angela Dalle Vacche. And
you'd probably want to work in Benjamin's essay on the work of art under
mechanical reproduction, which students seem to grasp well. And for a
really fascinating (if slow) film on the artistic process, track down H.G.
Clouzot's "The Mystery of Picasso".

    Best wishes with this course--

    Tim
