Area CFP: The Mexican-American War and the Spanish –American War in Film

Like the contemporary situation in Iraq, America’s wars with Mexico and Spain proved equally controversial and still spark discussion and debate. The treatment of the Mexican-American War and the Spanish-American War in film also proves problematic, particularly in terms of historical accuracy. Central issues concerning patriotic posturing and mythologizing, along with contemporary immigration, trade alliances, and race relations provide ample opportunity for discussion and investigation. Film treatments of Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, and mythic figures like Davy Crockett and Sam Houston reflect Hollywood’s often romantic interpretation . How can Hollywood’s romanticism be reconciled to the historical record? Have do films depicting these prominent conflicts also portray the politics and the nationalities involved in the actual events? In what ways do Hollywood and history interact and intersect when presenting these two military conflicts? Can history be entertaining? If so, at what cost?

The Film & History League, with the Literature/Film Association, will be holding its conference on “War in Film, Television, and History” during November 11-14, 2004, near Dallas, TX. Full details on the location, registration procedures, and additional area topics can be found on the web site www.filmandhistory.org. Deadline for proposals is July 30, 2004
