This is a facinating topic, Paul, and I for one would appreciate if you
could tell us more about this class (perhaps a link to the Course Page or
something). As for your request, The Oxford Guide to Film Studies (edited by
John Hill and Pamela Church Gibson) has several articles that may be
helpful.

Susan Hayward has a short writeup on Luc Besson in it, for one, and there
are a couple more general essays that may help, though I can't be certain as
I haven't read them in a while:

"Concepts of national cinema" by Stephen Crofts
"Issues in European cinema" by Ginette Vincendeau
