A screen split often on the diagonal was regularly used for phone
conversations.
Rouben Mamoulian's 1932 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde repeatedly used a
diagonal wipe which paused halfway in its progress across the screen
to achieve a momentary split screen effect and increase the visual
associations between two succeeding shots.
