I haven't found either CSS or Macrovision copy protection to be a
problem capturing frames from DVDs while they play in my computer
drive. Just turn off the video accelerator in a typical software such
as PowerDVD (which bypasses the graphics card) and grab away. The result
is hardly the quality of a full-tone 35mm movie still from MOMA, but
Photoshop will blow it up without a lot of annoying distortion. I find
that the frame grabs look pretty good on a book page. Given the amount
of information on the DVD, I believe--though I cannot prove--that the
quality of these grabs could be higher. Perhaps in some software they
are. I'm far too little the tech-head to know what governs that
resolution, however.
