Subject: [surrealmovies] Peter Greenaway at Transmediale & Berlinale

Presentation: Peter Greenaway (gb/nl) - The Tulse Luper Suitcases
Wednesday 5. February, 16.00 hrs
House of World Cultures
Transmediale 2003

The project is devided in two larger sections. The first consists of one feature film in three parts (Film 1 is to premiere in May 2003 at the Cannes Film Festival), three linear DVDs of the films and a concluding 16-episode television series.

The second part is based upon a website - premiering at the Transmediale 2003 and at the Berlinale 2003 - that will grow daily for 1,001 days. Spin offs of this website will be many interactive DVD-productions, a number of books and a traveling exhibition of the 92 Luper suitcases.

The use of many channels for distribution will enable the full presentation of the enormous, encyclopedic story of Luper's life for a wide audience. Peter Greenaway currently develops many thousands of (visualized) stories on Tulse Luper. Furthermore, the ambition is there to reproduce each of the 92 suitcases as a project in itself, as an opera, as DVD, as television, as theatre, etc.

Start up of the Tulse Luper Suitcases takes place in the Netherlands, where cooperation is established with many educational institutions. In 2003 and 2004 the focus for development will be on Germany and the final stages will be realized mostly in Italy. Furthemore we seek collaborations in Wales, France, Spain and Hungary.

At the Transmediale Peter Greenaway will speak on the background and full scope of The Tulse Luper Suitcases project. The Kasander Film Company will highlight the first development of the Tulse Luper Web and present its official international start, students of the Institut fuer Theaterwissenschaft at the University of Leipzig - the first German 'Luper Authorities' - will present their research on Tulse Luper in The Tulse Luper Office.

The Tulse Luper Suitcases in Germany project is a collaboration with the following institutions:

- producer Kasander Film Company (Rotterdam/NL)
- German co-producer Net Entertainment (Berlin/DE)
- Mitteldeutschen Medienförderung GmbH (MDM)

Educational institutions in Germany are:

- Martin Luther Universität, Halle
- Hochschule für Kunst und Design Burg Giebiechenstein, Halle
- Universität von Leipzig

From the site's FAQ:

Question: Why do you invite a filmmaker like Peter Greenaway for transmediale?

> Peter Greenaway is an outstanding international artist who has dealt with the crossing of artistic and disciplinary borders for many years, and whose engagement with a digital aesthetics has already led to several film and exhibition projects. That in itself would be reason enough to present his work at an interdisciplinary art festival. However, we are particularly happy to be able to present at transmediale.03 the world premiere of the website which Greenaway and his team are developing for his current project, 'The Tulse Luper Suitcases'. This project will be realised, over the next years, in the form of several films, DVDs and other publications, as well as an extensive web environment, all of which will tell the multi-facetted story of the fictive character of Tulse Luper. It is a particular honour for us that Greenaway will come first to transmediale, and only a few days later to Berlinale, to present his new project. But this sequence is programmatic in that a lot of the project is driven by the logic of digital technologies, rather than by the films, a fact that is also reflected in Greenaway's intensive cooperation with design students from universities in Halle and Leipzig who are helping to build parts of the website.

"Surrealism doesn't try to define or explain, it leaves a mystery which, like the Heineken adverts, reaches parts of the brain others cannot reach." - Terry Gilliam

"All my movies are about strange worlds that you can't go into unless you build them and film them. That's what's so important about film to me. I just like going into strange worlds." - David Lynch

"Everybody's a mad scientist, and life is their lab. We're all trying to experiment to find a way to live, to solve problems, to fend off madness and chaos." - David Cronenberg
